Why Am I So Exhausted? When The Nervous System Forgets How To Rest.

You know the feeling. Your body feels heavy. Your brain won't stop talking. You scroll because you're too tired to do anything else, yet somehow that doesn't make you feel rested. You wake up at 3 a.m. thinking about your to-do list, your family, that text you forgot to answer, the future, the past, and everything in between. You spend the day running on caffeine, stress, and determination. This may have become your new typical, but trust me it’s not normal; it’s your body operating on depletion.

The Human Nervous System Wasn't Built for 2026

For most of human history, our nervous systems were designed to respond to what was directly in front of us. It would respond to the needs of our family, community, weather patterns, and the tasks that needed to be completed during the day. Moments of challenge were often balanced by recovery time. However, today many of us jump on our phone and know what is happening in every corner of the world by 8 a.m.

Between the work emails pinging us, social media notifications, text messages, and the endless scrolling of ads, conflict driven opinions, tragedies and even opportunities for comparison, our world dictates a different kind of expectation.

We must be readily available. Up-to-date. Constantly Connected. Overstimulated.

And while we may believe we are more connected to the world around us, many of us have never felt more disconnected from ourselves.

What Is The Hidden Cost Of Social Media Scrolling?

Our nervous system is incredibly adaptive. When life requires us to move quickly, think rapidly, multitask, and remain alert, the body rises to the challenge. The problem is that most of us never leave that state. We move faster. We think faster. We consume more information. We switch tasks constantly. We respond immediately.

When we scroll on social media, we leave out room for pause. Because we’ve learned this to be common, we see it as normal, and we often don't realize how activated we've become. The body learns that "on" is the default setting. Then bedtime arrives. The lights go out. The house becomes quiet. And suddenly we're frustrated because we can't calm down. But the nervous system can't instantly shift from 100 miles per hour to complete rest simply because the clock says it's time to sleep. The body follows the patterns it has practiced all day long.

Why Scrolling Is Not Rest.

One of the most fascinating realities of modern life is that many of us attempt to soothe ourselves with the very things that keep us activated. We're lonely, so we scroll. We're tired, so we scroll. We're overwhelmed, so we scroll. We're anxious, so we scroll. We're seeking relief. We're seeking connection. We're seeking a break from our own thoughts. In many ways, adults often use screens the way infants use soothing objects. Not because we're weak or lacking discipline. Because we're human. We're trying to regulate ourselves. The problem is that consuming more information rarely provides the thing we're actually craving.

What rest elements am I missing when I scroll social media?

  • Stillness

  • Quiet

  • Presence

  • Meaningful connection

  • Space to hear your thoughts

  • Time without any demands

Instead of giving the nervous system a chance to settle, we often buffer every uncomfortable moment with more stimulation. And while that may provide temporary distraction, it rarely creates restoration.

How Your Body Gets Stuck In Survival Mode.

As an acupuncturist, I’ve noticed that many of the women I provide acupuncture to face symptoms and problems that share a common foundation - the body’s inability to return to a state of recovery.

When the nervous system remains activated for long periods of time, you may see some of these symptoms arise:

  1. Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep

  2. In the morning you feel more tired than rested

  3. Digestive issues, no matter what you eat

  4. Hormonal symptoms

  5. Anxiety and/or depression

  6. Chronic pain

  7. Decrease in resilience

Energy becomes inconsistent.

Inflammation increases.

You may be told that your bloodwork even looks “normal.” However, this doesn’t mean your symptoms aren’t real. The inflammation is real. The fatigue is real. The digestive changes are real. The hormonal shifts are real.

The nervous system influences every system in the body, which means prolonged activation eventually affects far more than stress levels alone.

Why Can’t I Relax On Vacation?

You may be pushing through until you can rest when you take time off of work. Then vacation arrives and instead of feeling relaxed, you actually feel restless. You reach for your phone without thinking. You feel guilty for doing nothing. You struggle to be still. You find yourself creating tasks where none exist.

This is a sign that the nervous system has spent so much time in a state of activation that stillness no longer feels familiar.Rest becomes something we intellectually want but physiologically struggle to access. The body has forgotten how to get there.

How Soul Arrow Acupuncture Can Help.

One of the reasons nervous system regulation is such an important focus in East Asian Medicine is because healing cannot happen efficiently when the body remains stuck in survival mode. At Soul Arrow, we don't simply target a symptom. Through acupuncture, we create conditions where the body can shift out of constant activation and into a state that supports repair, recovery, and regulation. My patients often describe feeling calmer, sleeping more deeply, thinking more clearly, and feeling more present sometimes after only one treatment. This isn’t because I told them to relax, it’s because their body finally remembered how.

Nervous system regulation is foundational to your overall well-being and can keep you healthier longer. The body heals and restores better when it is safe enough to rest.

You may be one of those people that wait until they completely crash before they finally slow down. You push through exhaustion and feel normal when you’re actually overwhelmed. You may be convincing yourself that you’ll rest after X, Y, or Z. But, trust me, exhaustion is NOT something you have to earn. Don’t wait until your body is screaming for help before you listen. Not to be dramatic, but this type of behavior can actually  lead to heart disease, stroke, cancer, and even death.

If you feel anxious, inflamed, exhausted, overstimulated, or stuck in survival mode, your body isn't failing you. It's communicating with you. Constant activation is not the only way to live and it is definitely not the best way to live. The nervous system can learn a different rhythm. The body can remember how to rest and calm is still possible.
