Is it PMS or PMDD?

If you feel like you become a completely different person before and during your period every month, that is worth paying attention to. Let’s remove the old derogatory statements like “you’re too emotional,” and “this is just part of being a woman, why can’t you handle it?” and replace them with the truth, your body is providing you with important information.

For many women, the days leading up to their period can feel like navigating life with a completely different nervous system. Do you experience any of the following:

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Increased anxiety

  • Lack of patience

  • Small inconveniences seem overwhelming

  • Sensory intolerance

  • Migranes

  • Breast tenderness

  • Digestive problems

  • Energy depletion

Do these symptoms leave as quickly as they arrived when your period starts or you get so many days in your cycle? If this pattern sounds familiar, you're not imagining it. And you're certainly not alone. It could be PMDD, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder.

PMDD Is More Than "Bad PMS"

I have seen many women who minimize their symptoms, blame themselves, and wonder why they can’t seem to be “better.” It’s easy to let others make you think that your mood swings are just a normal part of a normal menstrual cycle; However, when these symptoms interfere with your relationship, work, sleep, mental health, and quality of life, the issue may be worth exploring further..

Whether you're experiencing PMS or the more severe symptoms associated with PMDD, the experience is real. Your body is communicating something.

Your hormones influence your entire nervous system, they influence inflammation, they affect neurotransmitters, and are even big players when it comes to emotional regulation. Did you know that your hormones actually affect your sleep, energy production, stress, digestion and even cognitive function?! This means that your cycle doesn’t just affect your reproductive system, it impacts your entire experience of life.

When hormone fluctuations interact with stress, poor sleep, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, or an already overloaded nervous system, symptoms often become more noticeable. This is why two women can have very different experiences during the same phase of their cycle.

While one woman may have mild irritability, another may experience anxiety, rage, insomnia, migraines, fatigue, and a profound sense of emotional overwhelm. This difference can be an important signal that your body is crying out for help.

What Can Your Period Tell You About Your Overall Health?

It’s important to know that your menstrual cycle is not separate from your digestion. Your digestion is not separate from your sleep. Your sleep is not separate from your stress response. Your stress response is not separate from your energy, mood, or inflammation levels. All of the systems in your body are connected. At Soul Arrow Acupuncture, we see cycle symptoms are part of a larger physiological pattern. The menstrual cycle provides valuable information about the body's ability to regulate itself. Changes in mood, pain levels, energy, sleep, digestion, and emotional resilience often offer clues about underlying imbalances that deserve attention.

Looking at the Whole Picture

When someone comes to Soul Arrow Acupuncture to seek treatment for PMS or PMDD, the conversation extends beyond the menstrual cycle itself. We're looking at:

● Sleep quality

● Stress levels

● Nervous system regulation

● Digestive health

● Energy production

● Recovery capacity

● Inflammation

● Circulation

● Emotional resilience

● Overall hormonal patterns

Because while the symptoms may appear before your period, the underlying pattern is often developing throughout the entire month. Our goal isn't simply to suppress your symptoms; rather, it is to understand why your body is expressing them in the first place.

Stop Dreading Half of Your Life.

One of the most heartbreaking things I hear from women is that they've started organizing their lives around avoiding their own cycle. They know which week they'll feel like themselves. They know which week they'll struggle. They know when they'll be more reactive, more exhausted, more anxious, or more overwhelmed. Some women spend years feeling as though they lose half of every month to symptoms they believe they simply have to endure.

You may have even deemed this as part of your “personality.” Trust me, it isn’t. It’s just a pattern and patterns can always change.

Your menstrual cycle shouldn’t be a monthly punishment. While some fluctuations are normal, living with severe mood changes, debilitating symptoms, and persistent emotional distress should not be accepted as inevitable. Your body is not working against you, but it is trying to tell you something. Often, symptoms that feel the most disruptive are also providing some of the clearest information about what your body needs.

Don’t spend 25–50% of your life feeling emotionally hijacked by your hormones. Don’t wait until symptoms become unbearable before seeking support. With the right approach, many women experience meaningful changes in their cycles, energy, sleep, mood, and overall quality of life.

Because when the whole person receives support and not just the symptoms, the body often becomes far more capable of finding balance. Schedule a consultation with Soul Arrow Acupuncture today and see how East Asian Medicine can help improve your life and your cycles.
